China sourcing
Importing from China to Algeria
Ports, realistic transit times, the documents customs will ask for, and the mistake that costs importers in Algiers the most time.
Sea freight
35 to 50 days
Ports: Algiers, Bejaia, Djen Djen (Jijel)
Air freight
4 to 8 days
Airport: Houari Boumediene International Airport, Algiers
These are typical port-to-port and airport-to-airport ranges for the Algeria route. They are not a quotation, and they do not include production or customs clearance.
Peak season before Chinese New Year, port congestion and vessel roll-overs all push these numbers up. Plan with the top of the range, not the bottom.
Why this route works the way it does
China has been Algeria's largest supplier since 2013, and Chinese customs recorded 12.28 billion dollars of exports to Algeria over the first eleven months of 2025, up around 17 percent year on year. Cars, telephone handsets and goods vehicles lead the flow, alongside the construction materials and consumer goods that fill most of the containers arriving at Algiers. What sets Algeria apart from its neighbours is not the freight, it is the order of the formalities: the banking file has to be open before your supplier is allowed to load.
Which port can actually receive your ship
Three ports matter for containers from China, and they are not interchangeable. Algiers carries the volume but is the shallowest, with roughly 10.5 to 11 metres over the container berths and two 300 metre quays, so it takes feeder tonnage only. Bejaia sits near 11.3 metres with a 200 metre limit on vessel length. Djen Djen at Jijel is the outlier: 17 metres alongside, 18.2 metres of harbour depth and a 19 metre access channel, run under a DP World concession, and it has actually handled a 294 metre container ship and performed the country's first transhipment call. Oran serves the west at about 12 metres. In practice nothing arrives from Asia on a mainline ship: boxes are discharged at Algeciras, Valencia, Barcelona or Malta and finish the journey on a short sea feeder, which is the real reason the transit range is wide. Most Asia to Europe services were still routing via the Cape of Good Hope through 2026, which adds roughly ten to fourteen days.
Currency and regional trade rules
The import regime changed repeatedly through 2025 and 2026, and several guides still describe a system that no longer exists. ALGEX was dissolved in September 2025 and the import side of its remit passed to a new Algerian import authority. Importers bringing goods in for resale as they are must lodge a forecast import programme with the Ministry of Foreign Trade each half year, and that validation is a precondition for both bank domiciliation and customs clearance. Payment for goods imported for resale still runs through documentary credit or documentary collection. Since 19 May 2026 the bank must also check that an operator's outstanding domiciled but unsettled imports, across every bank combined, stay within its own equity. This section is correct as of August 2026. Algerian foreign trade rules moved three times between late April and late May 2026 alone, so confirm the position in force before you commit to a shipment.
What catches importers out on this route
Since 14 May 2026 the bank file has to be open before your supplier ships. Note 01/DGC/2026 from the Bank of Algeria requires the domiciliation to be in place first, and obliges the bank to check that the date on the transport document, the bill of lading or air waybill, falls after the domiciliation date. The test is the shipment date shown on the transport document, not the date of your invoice, your contract or your booking. That makes it a loading side constraint rather than a payment one, and it is exactly what most guides on this route still miss. It is also why we will not quote you a delivered duty paid price into Algeria: we hold the container at origin until your domiciliation is confirmed open, because goods that sail first usually cannot be regularised on arrival.
How the process actually works
- 1Define the product precisely: specification, materials, packaging, quantity and target unit cost. Vague briefs are the single biggest source of wrong goods arriving.
- 2Identify and verify suppliers. Company registration, export history and factory type matter more than a polished profile page.
- 3Sample and approve before production. Approving a physical sample gives you something concrete to inspect against later.
- 4Inspect before the goods leave China. Once a container sails, a defect becomes a freight problem instead of a production problem.
- 5Book freight and prepare documents together, not one after the other. Missing paperwork is what holds cargo at destination.
- 6Clear customs in Algeria and arrange the final leg to your warehouse in Algiers.
What drives the cost
- Volume and weight. Sea freight is priced on the greater of the two, so light bulky goods cost more than their weight suggests.
- Full container versus groupage. A full container is cheaper per unit, but only if you can actually fill it.
- Season. Rates rise sharply in the weeks before Chinese New Year and during peak shipping periods.
- Incoterms. FOB, CIF and DDP shift very different amounts of cost and risk onto you, and quotes are rarely comparable until you check which one you are being given.
- Duties and taxes at destination, which depend on the HS code of your specific goods.
We deliberately do not publish duty percentages here. They change, they vary by product classification, and an out-of-date figure on a web page can cost you real money. Confirm the rate for your HS code before you commit to a landed-cost calculation.
Documents you will need
- Commercial invoice
- Packing list
- Bill of lading (sea) or air waybill (air)
- Certificate of origin
- Any product-specific certificate or conformity document your goods require
The invoice, the packing list and the transport document must describe the same goods in the same terms. Most clearance delays trace back to a mismatch between these three, not to a missing exotic certificate.
How Kuai Sourcing handles this route
We source, verify, inspect and ship as one managed process, so the supplier, the inspection and the freight are not three separate companies blaming each other. Sourcing requests and quotations are free, and you see the landed cost before you commit.
Common questions
- How long does shipping from China to Algeria take?
- Sea freight typically runs 35 to 50 days port to port to Algiers, Bejaia, Djen Djen (Jijel), and air freight 4 to 8 days to Houari Boumediene International Airport, Algiers. Production time comes before that and customs clearance after, so plan the whole chain rather than the transit leg alone.
- Should I use air or sea freight to Algeria?
- Sea freight wins on cost for anything heavy, bulky or not urgent. Air freight is worth it for high-value, low-volume goods, for samples, and when a stock-out would cost you more than the freight difference. Many importers ship the bulk by sea and air a small first batch to start selling.
- What causes the most delay on this route?
- Since 14 May 2026 the bank file has to be open before your supplier ships. Note 01/DGC/2026 from the Bank of Algeria requires the domiciliation to be in place first, and obliges the bank to check that the date on the transport document, the bill of lading or air waybill, falls after the domiciliation date. It is also why we will not quote you a delivered duty paid price into Algeria: we hold the container at origin until your domiciliation is confirmed open, because goods that sail first usually cannot be regularised on arrival.
- Can I import small quantities to Algeria?
- Yes. Groupage, also called LCL, lets you pay for part of a container instead of the whole thing. It costs more per cubic metre and usually takes a little longer, because the container waits until it is full, but it makes small first orders realistic.
- Which port will goods shipped to Algeria actually arrive at?
- Three ports matter for containers from China, and they are not interchangeable. Algiers carries the volume but is the shallowest, with roughly 10.5 to 11 metres over the container berths and two 300 metre quays, so it takes feeder tonnage only.
