China sourcing
Importing from China to Kazakhstan
Ports, realistic transit times, the documents customs will ask for, and the mistake that costs importers in Almaty the most time.
Rail and road freight
12 to 20 days
Border crossings: Altynkol rail crossing (opposite Khorgos, China), Dostyk rail crossing (opposite Alashankou, China), Nur Zholy road crossing (near Khorgos)
Air freight
3 to 8 days
Airport: Almaty International Airport (ALA)
These are typical ranges for the Kazakhstan route, measured from the Chinese terminal to the destination city. There is no sea leg on this corridor: goods cross a land border. This is not a quotation, and it excludes production and customs clearance.
Peak season before Chinese New Year, port congestion and vessel roll-overs all push these numbers up. Plan with the top of the range, not the bottom.
Why this route works the way it does
Kazakhstan is landlocked, and here that barely matters: nothing from China arrives by sea. Goods cross a land border, by rail at Altynkol or Dostyk, or by truck through Nur Zholy near Khorgos. Read the sea figure here as rail transit to Almaty: there is no vessel and no port. The country is also a main corridor for China to Europe rail freight, which buys frequency but costs you when a surge fills the terminals.
Which port can actually receive your ship
The constraint here is gauge, not water. Chinese track is 1,435 mm, Kazakh track 1,520 mm, so every box changes trains at the border, lifted by crane onto Kazakh flatcars or moved by swapping bogies. A clean transfer takes hours; a queue turns it into a day or more, which is most of the spread in a quoted figure. Altynkol, opposite Khorgos, feeds Almaty and the south; Dostyk, opposite Alashankou, feeds the north and traffic on into Russia. Six added tracks lifted Altynkol from roughly 20 to 28 trains a day, and a second track on the 836 km Dostyk to Moiynty line opened in September 2025. Ask which crossing you are routed over, and what dwell the quote assumes.
Currency and regional trade rules
An import contract above the equivalent of 50,000 US dollars has to be registered with your servicing bank in Kazakhstan for an accounting number, and that has to happen before either side starts performing, not after the deposit leaves. Confirm the current threshold with your bank. Kazakhstan sits inside the EAEU customs union with Russia, Belarus, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan, so a box cleared here circulates without internal customs. One exception: goods on Kazakhstan's WTO exemption list, released at the lower rate, are barred from moving on to another member state, and Kazakhstan tracks them domestically through its electronic invoicing system.
What catches importers out on this route
The gate here is EAC conformity under EAEU technical regulations, and what catches importers is who may hold it. This is not a certificate your Chinese factory buys at origin. An EAC certificate or declaration is issued only to an applicant registered inside the union, so it is you, or an authorised representative acting for the manufacturer, and the liability follows the name on it. Chinese CCC, CE and ISO documents are not substitutes, testing runs at laboratories accredited within the union, and samples go first. Decide it at factory selection, not at booking.
How the process actually works
- 1Define the product precisely: specification, materials, packaging, quantity and target unit cost. Vague briefs are the single biggest source of wrong goods arriving.
- 2Identify and verify suppliers. Company registration, export history and factory type matter more than a polished profile page.
- 3Sample and approve before production. Approving a physical sample gives you something concrete to inspect against later.
- 4Inspect before the goods leave China. Once a container sails, a defect becomes a freight problem instead of a production problem.
- 5Book freight and prepare documents together, not one after the other. Missing paperwork is what holds cargo at destination.
- 6Clear customs in Kazakhstan and arrange the final leg to your warehouse in Almaty.
What drives the cost
- Volume and weight. Rail freight is priced on the greater of the two, so light bulky goods cost more than their weight suggests.
- Full container versus groupage. A full container is cheaper per unit, but only if you can actually fill it.
- Season. Rates rise sharply in the weeks before Chinese New Year and during peak shipping periods.
- Incoterms. FOB, CIF and DDP shift very different amounts of cost and risk onto you, and quotes are rarely comparable until you check which one you are being given.
- Duties and taxes at destination, which depend on the HS code of your specific goods.
We deliberately do not publish duty percentages here. They change, they vary by product classification, and an out-of-date figure on a web page can cost you real money. Confirm the rate for your HS code before you commit to a landed-cost calculation.
Documents you will need
- Commercial invoice
- Packing list
- Bill of lading (sea) or air waybill (air)
- Certificate of origin
- Any product-specific certificate or conformity document your goods require
The invoice, the packing list and the transport document must describe the same goods in the same terms. Most clearance delays trace back to a mismatch between these three, not to a missing exotic certificate.
How Kuai Sourcing handles this route
We source, verify, inspect and ship as one managed process, so the supplier, the inspection and the freight are not three separate companies blaming each other. Sourcing requests and quotations are free, and you see the landed cost before you commit.
Common questions
- How long does shipping from China to Kazakhstan take?
- Rail and road freight typically runs 12 to 20 days from the Chinese terminal, crossing at Altynkol rail crossing (opposite Khorgos, China), Dostyk rail crossing (opposite Alashankou, China), Nur Zholy road crossing (near Khorgos), and air freight 3 to 8 days to Almaty International Airport (ALA). Production time comes before that and customs clearance after, so plan the whole chain rather than the transit leg alone.
- Should I use air or rail freight to Kazakhstan?
- Rail wins on cost for anything heavy, bulky or not urgent, and on this corridor it is also far faster than a sea routing would be. Air is worth it for high-value, low-volume goods, for samples, and when a stock-out would cost you more than the freight difference. Many importers move the bulk by rail and air a small first batch to start selling.
- What causes the most delay on this route?
- The gate here is EAC conformity under EAEU technical regulations, and what catches importers is who may hold it.
- Can I import small quantities to Kazakhstan?
- Yes. Groupage, also called LCL, lets you pay for part of a container instead of the whole thing. It costs more per cubic metre and usually takes a little longer, because the container waits until it is full, but it makes small first orders realistic.
- Which port will goods shipped to Kazakhstan actually arrive at?
- The constraint here is gauge, not water. Chinese track is 1,435 mm, Kazakh track 1,520 mm, so every box changes trains at the border, lifted by crane onto Kazakh flatcars or moved by swapping bogies.
