Importing from China to Mauritania

Ports, realistic transit times, the documents customs will ask for, and the mistake that costs importers in Nouakchott the most time.

Sea freight

35 to 50 days

Ports: Nouakchott

Air freight

7 to 15 days

Airport: Nouakchott Oumtounsy International Airport (NKC)

These are typical port-to-port and airport-to-airport ranges for the Mauritania route. They are not a quotation, and they do not include production or customs clearance.

Peak season before Chinese New Year, port congestion and vessel roll-overs all push these numbers up. Plan with the top of the range, not the bottom.

Why this route works the way it does

Despite its long Atlantic coastline, container trade in Mauritania runs in practice through a single door, the port of Nouakchott, while Nouadhibou remains the iron ore and fishing port. The market is small, so direct Asia services do not usually call there, and your cargo is transhipped onto a feeder at a hub port. So your schedule is set by sailing frequency and waiting time at the transhipment port, not by distance. The figure given is quay to quay, before clearance and inland transport.

Which port can actually receive your ship

The Nouakchott container terminal (TCN) is the practical berth: a 570-metre quay that entered service in April 2022, with more than 14 metres of water alongside. But depth is not the ceiling that concerns you: the operator states that it accepts ships up to roughly 12.5 metres of draft, and that alone rules out the largest vessels on the Asia lines and makes arrival on a feeder the norm. Operation of the terminal passed from APM Terminals to TCN in December 2023 under a long-term concession, so you may still find the old name on older bookings or documents. As for Nouadhibou, its expansion is a planning horizon for the years ahead, not a shipping option this year. Ask your agent which transhipment port is used and how many days of waiting to expect there.

Currency and regional trade rules

The currency is the Mauritanian ouguiya (MRU), redenominated at the start of 2018 at ten old ouguiya to one new one, and prices are still sometimes quoted in the old unit, so ask for the unit to be stated in writing on every offer. The ouguiya is not pegged to the euro the way the CFA franc is next door, and it moves, so work out the exchange difference between the order date and the date duties are settled. Mauritania sits outside any functioning customs union: it left ECOWAS in 2000 and signed an association agreement in 2017 without coming under its common external tariff. There is therefore no regional transit regime to carry your goods overland into Mali, and any shipment bound for Bamako needs a Malian cargo tracking note, and the file for it is opened in the country of shipment.

What catches importers out on this route

The regulatory gate here is a certificate of conformity under the conformity verification programme (PVCM), not a cargo tracking note: unlike its two neighbours Senegal and Mali, Mauritania is not an ECTN/BSC country. The programme is assigned to a single body, Bureau Veritas, so you cannot choose between inspection companies, and the file is opened by the Chinese exporter, who bears the fees. More important still, compliance is measured against the date of the ocean bill of lading and not the date of arrival, and there is no inspection at destination: if the container has sailed without a certificate, it is too late. The threshold for inspection is 1500 euros of FOB value, and used goods are covered. Write the certificate into the terms of your purchase order.

How the process actually works

  1. 1Define the product precisely: specification, materials, packaging, quantity and target unit cost. Vague briefs are the single biggest source of wrong goods arriving.
  2. 2Identify and verify suppliers. Company registration, export history and factory type matter more than a polished profile page.
  3. 3Sample and approve before production. Approving a physical sample gives you something concrete to inspect against later.
  4. 4Inspect before the goods leave China. Once a container sails, a defect becomes a freight problem instead of a production problem.
  5. 5Book freight and prepare documents together, not one after the other. Missing paperwork is what holds cargo at destination.
  6. 6Clear customs in Mauritania and arrange the final leg to your warehouse in Nouakchott.

What drives the cost

  • Volume and weight. Sea freight is priced on the greater of the two, so light bulky goods cost more than their weight suggests.
  • Full container versus groupage. A full container is cheaper per unit, but only if you can actually fill it.
  • Season. Rates rise sharply in the weeks before Chinese New Year and during peak shipping periods.
  • Incoterms. FOB, CIF and DDP shift very different amounts of cost and risk onto you, and quotes are rarely comparable until you check which one you are being given.
  • Duties and taxes at destination, which depend on the HS code of your specific goods.

We deliberately do not publish duty percentages here. They change, they vary by product classification, and an out-of-date figure on a web page can cost you real money. Confirm the rate for your HS code before you commit to a landed-cost calculation.

Documents you will need

  • Commercial invoice
  • Packing list
  • Bill of lading (sea) or air waybill (air)
  • Certificate of origin
  • Any product-specific certificate or conformity document your goods require

The invoice, the packing list and the transport document must describe the same goods in the same terms. Most clearance delays trace back to a mismatch between these three, not to a missing exotic certificate.

How Kuai Sourcing handles this route

We source, verify, inspect and ship as one managed process, so the supplier, the inspection and the freight are not three separate companies blaming each other. Sourcing requests and quotations are free, and you see the landed cost before you commit.

Common questions

How long does shipping from China to Mauritania take?
Sea freight typically runs 35 to 50 days port to port to Nouakchott, and air freight 7 to 15 days to Nouakchott Oumtounsy International Airport (NKC). Production time comes before that and customs clearance after, so plan the whole chain rather than the transit leg alone.
Should I use air or sea freight to Mauritania?
Sea freight wins on cost for anything heavy, bulky or not urgent. Air freight is worth it for high-value, low-volume goods, for samples, and when a stock-out would cost you more than the freight difference. Many importers ship the bulk by sea and air a small first batch to start selling.
What causes the most delay on this route?
The regulatory gate here is a certificate of conformity under the conformity verification programme (PVCM), not a cargo tracking note: unlike its two neighbours Senegal and Mali, Mauritania is not an ECTN/BSC country. The programme is assigned to a single body, Bureau Veritas, so you cannot choose between inspection companies, and the file is opened by the Chinese exporter, who bears the fees. The threshold for inspection is 1500 euros of FOB value, and used goods are covered. Write the certificate into the terms of your purchase order.
Can I import small quantities to Mauritania?
Yes. Groupage, also called LCL, lets you pay for part of a container instead of the whole thing. It costs more per cubic metre and usually takes a little longer, because the container waits until it is full, but it makes small first orders realistic.
Which port will goods shipped to Mauritania actually arrive at?
The Nouakchott container terminal (TCN) is the practical berth: a 570-metre quay that entered service in April 2022, with more than 14 metres of water alongside.
