China sourcing
Importing from China to Uzbekistan
Ports, realistic transit times, the documents customs will ask for, and the mistake that costs importers in Tashkent the most time.
Rail and road freight
20 to 35 days
Border crossings: Bandar Abbas (Shahid Rajaee), Iran, Poti, Georgia
Air freight
4 to 9 days
Airport: Islam Karimov Tashkent International Airport (TAS)
These are typical ranges for the Uzbekistan route, measured from the Chinese terminal to the destination city. There is no sea leg on this corridor: goods cross a land border. This is not a quotation, and it excludes production and customs clearance.
Peak season before Chinese New Year, port congestion and vessel roll-overs all push these numbers up. Plan with the top of the range, not the bottom.
Why this route works the way it does
China and Russia are Uzbekistan's two largest trading partners, but almost nothing from China arrives by ship. Uzbekistan is one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world, alongside Liechtenstein, so there is no sea answer at all. The working route is overland: rail through Kazakhstan, or road and rail through Kyrgyzstan, crossing one more country's customs territory on the way. Treat sea as the exception here, not the default.
Which port can actually receive your ship
Here the equivalent of port draft is track gauge. China runs 1,435 mm, Central Asia 1,520 mm, so every container is lifted or re-bogied where the two meet: Khorgos to Altynkol, or Alashankou to Dostyk. Ask which crossing your train uses, and the current dwell there. Water only matters on the long way round. Bandar Abbas is the usual transit port, its berths about 15 metres alongside, deep enough for this trade, though Iranian routing raises banking and sanctions questions many forwarders will not take on. Poti in Georgia is the slower alternative, approached from the west and railed east via Baku and the Caspian. Either way the sea figure on this page ends at a foreign quay.
Currency and regional trade rules
Registration comes before payment here, not after. Every import contract is registered in the state foreign trade system and gets an identification number; the bank's currency control and the customs declaration both reference it. Get it wrong and the payment stalls before the goods do. The soum is not the obstacle it once was: floated in September 2017, dual rate gone, companies buying foreign currency for non-cash settlement without queueing for an allocation. Uzbekistan is an EAEU observer, not a member, so its neighbours' membership buys your cargo nothing at the Uzbek border.
What catches importers out on this route
The gate here is a code on every unit, not a document you buy. Under the Asl Belgisi system, run by CRPT Turon, every item in a covered category needs a unique Data Matrix code that the Uzbek importer orders and pays for, and it must be there before release into free circulation, applied at the factory or in a bonded warehouse. Household appliances phased in through 2022, beginning with fridges, washing machines and televisions on 15 April. Clearance is not the end: the import notification comes after, before you can sell.
How the process actually works
- 1Define the product precisely: specification, materials, packaging, quantity and target unit cost. Vague briefs are the single biggest source of wrong goods arriving.
- 2Identify and verify suppliers. Company registration, export history and factory type matter more than a polished profile page.
- 3Sample and approve before production. Approving a physical sample gives you something concrete to inspect against later.
- 4Inspect before the goods leave China. Once a container sails, a defect becomes a freight problem instead of a production problem.
- 5Book freight and prepare documents together, not one after the other. Missing paperwork is what holds cargo at destination.
- 6Clear customs in Uzbekistan and arrange the final leg to your warehouse in Tashkent.
What drives the cost
- Volume and weight. Rail freight is priced on the greater of the two, so light bulky goods cost more than their weight suggests.
- Full container versus groupage. A full container is cheaper per unit, but only if you can actually fill it.
- Season. Rates rise sharply in the weeks before Chinese New Year and during peak shipping periods.
- Incoterms. FOB, CIF and DDP shift very different amounts of cost and risk onto you, and quotes are rarely comparable until you check which one you are being given.
- Duties and taxes at destination, which depend on the HS code of your specific goods.
We deliberately do not publish duty percentages here. They change, they vary by product classification, and an out-of-date figure on a web page can cost you real money. Confirm the rate for your HS code before you commit to a landed-cost calculation.
Documents you will need
- Commercial invoice
- Packing list
- Bill of lading (sea) or air waybill (air)
- Certificate of origin
- Any product-specific certificate or conformity document your goods require
The invoice, the packing list and the transport document must describe the same goods in the same terms. Most clearance delays trace back to a mismatch between these three, not to a missing exotic certificate.
How Kuai Sourcing handles this route
We source, verify, inspect and ship as one managed process, so the supplier, the inspection and the freight are not three separate companies blaming each other. Sourcing requests and quotations are free, and you see the landed cost before you commit.
Common questions
- How long does shipping from China to Uzbekistan take?
- Rail and road freight typically runs 20 to 35 days from the Chinese terminal, crossing at Bandar Abbas (Shahid Rajaee), Iran, Poti, Georgia, and air freight 4 to 9 days to Islam Karimov Tashkent International Airport (TAS). Production time comes before that and customs clearance after, so plan the whole chain rather than the transit leg alone.
- Should I use air or rail freight to Uzbekistan?
- Rail wins on cost for anything heavy, bulky or not urgent, and on this corridor it is also far faster than a sea routing would be. Air is worth it for high-value, low-volume goods, for samples, and when a stock-out would cost you more than the freight difference. Many importers move the bulk by rail and air a small first batch to start selling.
- What causes the most delay on this route?
- The gate here is a code on every unit, not a document you buy.
- Can I import small quantities to Uzbekistan?
- Yes. Groupage, also called LCL, lets you pay for part of a container instead of the whole thing. It costs more per cubic metre and usually takes a little longer, because the container waits until it is full, but it makes small first orders realistic.
- Which port will goods shipped to Uzbekistan actually arrive at?
- Here the equivalent of port draft is track gauge. China runs 1,435 mm, Central Asia 1,520 mm, so every container is lifted or re-bogied where the two meet: Khorgos to Altynkol, or Alashankou to Dostyk.
